Aberdeen in Scotland

Aberdeen is the third largest of all the major cities in this country and which is part of the British Isles. Often the name is pronounced by the locals as "Aiberdeen" and its Gaelic name is Obar Dheathain. Aberdeen in Scotland has for many years been a popular tourist destination.

Because a large number of the buildings in the city were constructed, using locally quarried grey granite, which have deposits in it, that sparkle like silver it has earned other names as well. The main ones of these being "The Granite City" or the "Silver City with Golden Sands". Many of the buildings that are made from this particular stone were constructed from the mid 18th to the mid 20th century. It is these buildings that provide the city with such a beautiful and enchanting look to its skyline.

However, in the 1970, oil was found in the North Sea and this has now earnt the city several other names, including "The Oil Capital of Europe" as well as "The Energy Capital of Europe".

There is plenty of evidence to show that people have been living around the area of Aberdeen for more than 8,000 years. Archaeologists discovered have found several prehistoric villages located close to the mouths of both the River Dee and River Don.

The city has two universities the first one to be founded in 1495 is the University of Aberdeen and the second being the Robert Gordon University. The latter was only actually awarded its university status in 1992, but because of these two universities, it is now center of education in the northeast part of this country.
